Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

John 4:13-14, Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

The water, the living water, that Jesus offers is the ultimate thirst quencher. When was the last time you had something that really satisfied your desire? We had hamburgers on the grill for supper last night, we had talked about them for a few days, bought the stuff, planned them for last night and they were delicious! We had been looking forward to them all day. But guess what, this morning, I’m hungry again.

The needs we have for food and water are never ending. No matter what we eat or drink today, tomorrow we will want, no we will need something else. And often times, when we get what we think we want, it really doesn’t satisfy us. There is always a desire, a longing, a need for something else. But Jesus offers to this woman something that will truly satisfy her. He called it living water.

It is clear Jesus has something more than water on his mind, more than quenching physical thirst. Jesus is talking about the longing in our souls, the desire for the true satisfaction and peace that every human has. We know there is more to this life than we can see here, but what? Jesus tells us only he can fill that need, only he can provide what we truly need and want. It is not about water, it is about Jesus himself! It is about God becoming human, living among us, and offering himself for us. It is about having God himself living inside of us. That is what Jesus offers her and us as well.

Father, fill me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
