Late Tuesday afternoon, February 11, fire officials were still investigating the cause of a structure fire in the 100 block of Creefs Ridge Road in Manteo.

Members of the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department were called to the one story residence a few minutes before 3 p.m. on Monday, February 10, where they found an active fire within the walls with considerable smoke exiting the structure.

“There was minor damage, but there were no injuries reported,” said RIVFD Chief Talmadge Jones.

On arrival, firefighters made an initial attack through the garage and spent almost two hours at the scene extinguishing the fire. During the fire attack, part of the interior and exterior wall paneling was removed to be able to locate the fire. Creefs Ridge Road was blocked by fire apparatus and police vehicles during the entire two hours.

Firefighters from Manns Harbor, Nags Head, Colington and Kill Devil Hills also assisted. Dare County EMS, Dare County Sheriff’s Deputies and NC Highway Patrol also responded.

Roanoke Island response to the Creefs Ridge fire was slowed in part due to a call to Manns Harbor just 45 minutes earlier. At 2:08 p.m. Roanoke Island firefighters received a mutual aid call to help Manns Harbor with a structure fire near the end of Croatan Way.

The Manns Harbor fire, a rekindled brush fire that had spread underneath a deck, was easily contained and extinguished and there were no reported injuries at that location as well.
