Columbia Board of Aldermen adjust meeting style to accommodate coronavirus restrictions

The Board of Aldermen of the Town of Columbia will offer special public access to their upcoming Monday, April 6 board meeting. In response to the COVID-19 virus and restrictions placed on meetings by Governor Roy Cooper, the board will provide audible meeting access by telephone.

The board meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of the month in the meeting room of the Columbia Municipal Building, 103 Main Street. In order to honor the statewide six feet between individuals distancing requirement, the mayor and aldermen will meet in a reconfigured meeting room with telephone speaker phone so that interested individuals can call in to listen to proceedings. There will also be an opportunity for those that call in to offer comments during the public comment period.

Current COVID-19 virus restrictions limit the number of persons in a meeting to no more than 10 participants.

Columbia officials are making these changes to assure the health and safety of staff, Columbia citizens and visitors to the town offices. “These are unusual times and we have a limited staff,” stated Mayor James W. Cahoon. “Safety has to be first. We are honoring the Governor’s order.”
