Hatteras Island Car Safari brightens spirits

On a beautiful spring day, March 28, families cruised Hatteras Island roads, allowing children to “hunt” for stuffed animals. The event was the first ever Hatteras Island Car Safari.
Organized online by Heather Gray Jennette, Jessea Waterfield and Melissa Herman, the safari instantly caught the imagination of residents and businesses.
In Rodanthe, an elephant and giraffe hung out a window, as did a gorilla. In Waves, a zebra was up a tree and a crab was on a stair railing; a frog in the window and a flamingo on a porch.
In Salvo, Bonny Somers and Martin Somers set up a display of hand-drawn animals with stuffed animals and carved fish from neighbors.
In Avon, flamingos were arranged in Robin Ames’s yard.
Cars with children finding animals and counting houses or businesses with displays travelled the roads, but the always young-at-heart Bertie Midgett and Elsie Hooper went on safari, too.
