The Fourth of July fireworks celebration in Manteo has been canceled. Faced with an economic downfall and self-distancing concerns, the Manteo Board of Commissioners has voted to cancel July 4th celebrations for the town.

Each year the celebration draws thousands to the downtown waterfront. Manteo town manager James Ayers explained that in light of social distancing restrictions that are expected to remain in place, there would be no way for police to enforce or control crowd separation. The manager also outlined the town could lose most of the event cost if the event wasn’t canceled now.

Commissioners expressed regret as they voted unanimously to cancel the fireworks. The Town of Nags Head has already canceled their fireworks display. The pandemic crisis has already forced Manteo to cancel Dare Day – another downtown celebration – as well as suspend the farmers market and postpone a town-sponsored litter pickup.
