To the Editor:

We read with great interest the proactive approach of the Town of Kitty Hawk in addressing storm water issues (Reference the recent Coastland Times article regarding persistent flooding in the Rabbit Hollow/Kitty Dunes area).

Other OBX towns, including Southern Shores, have similar interior storm water issues which need to be addressed. As our OBX towns struggle with decisions regarding participation in long term beach nourishment they would be mindful to consider flooding in the broadest sense.

Storm water issues are not solely located along the oceanfront and a truly effective storm water management program must address flooding wherever it occurs. This will require thoughtful consideration and balancing of the economic, engineering, and environmental variables at play in each community. Effective planning requires nothing less.
