On Friday, June 19, 2020, new food maps for all of Dare County went into effect. The flood maps can now be used for flood insurance rating purposes.
The updated flood maps feature significant changes from the 2006 flood maps.
For example, many properties are now in Shaded X or X zone properties, which are considered low-risk zones. Other properties that remain in a flood zone may have a lower base flood elevation.
Dare County has consistently warned property owners in unincorporated Dare County that “low risk is not no risk” when it comes to keeping flood insurance in place. Dare County updated its Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance to require a local elevation standard to be applied to any property identified on the revised flood maps as Shaded X or X zone.
Incorporated towns of Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores and Duck may also have similar regulations.
