She was born on June 21, 1944 in Oswego, NY to the late Joseph Sherman and Annie Wakefield Sherman. Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Larry Hammond; her son, Joe Hammond (Meredith “MerryAnn”) of Weaverville; her daughter, Deborah Fielding (Tim) of Rockford, AL; her brother, Martin Sherman (Karen) of Palatka, FL; sister-in-laws, Ceil Salvadore of Hendersonville and Debbie Hammond of Greenville, SC; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and very special friends, Darlene Thompson of Danville, VA, Karen Vernesoni of Buxton, NC, and Mary White of Hawthorne, FL.
Joanne loved to travel with her husband all over the United States and to several foreign countries while he was active in the U.S. Navy. Her banking career started in Iceland and continued in Washington State and unto North Carolina with Centura Bank; starting as a teller and diligently working her way up to Financial Advisor. Joanne was a quiet soul with a dry sense of humor, a contagious laugh and a gorgeous smile that lit up the room. More importantly, she was a Godly woman who loved the Lord and devoted time every day to study her Bible. Her favorite chapter was Psalm 119 which she had memorized. She was a member of The Forward Church of Clarksburg, WV. Joanne was a great listener and always wanted to hear what people had to say. She had a huge love for animals and was their biggest advocate. She started the first ever Feline Animal Rescue in Cape Hatteras and it is still thriving today. Joanne loved to stay active and eat healthy. You could always find her exercising and lifting weights at Planet Fitness up until only two years ago!
