Duck structure fire contained, two first responders treated for heat-related illness

First responders contended with harsh heat conditions while battling a blaze in Duck Saturday afternoon.

A press release from the Town of Duck stated the Duck Fire Department was called to a reported residential structure fire located at 106 Bayberry Drive at 4:57 p.m. on Saturday, July 11: “Firefighters arrived to heavy fire throughout the structure. The occupants, including the homeowners, are safe and were not in the home when the fire began.”

The fire was contained to the home and no other structures were involved.

“Firefighters successfully kept the fire from spreading in the face of an intense heat index this afternoon in Duck, with perceived temperatures nearing 101 degrees,” stated the release issued late Saturday night. “One support personnel and one firefighter were treated for heat related illness by Dare County EMS with one person being transported.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“Thank you to our mutual aid agencies Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department, Kitty Hawk Fire Department, Corolla Fire and Rescue, Colington Fire Department and Dare County EMS for assistance on scene,” the release continued. Duck Police Department was also on scene.
