Barbara Ann (Aylward) Nickerson, 64, of Harbinger, died July 14, 2020 at her home surrounded by loved ones.

Barbara was born January 29, 1956 to the late Thomas J. and Phyllis T. (Cunningham) Aylward. She grew up in Melrose, MA.

Barbara served her country honorably in the United States Navy for 12 years stationed in Hawaii, Egypt, Philadelphia and New York. She worked for 20 years as a media assistant in the library for the Chesapeake, VA elementary schools. She was a parishioner of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk where she was the Religious Education Coordinator and a Eucharistic Minister.

Barbara is survived by husband Jay Nickerson; son Patrick Nickerson (Rachel); granddaughter Eden Grace; sisters Joanne Miller (Russell), Jeanne Aylward and Christina Tiernan (Sean); brothers Stephen Aylward (Marion), Peter Aylward (Sandra), Paul Aylward, Michael Aylward, Phillip Aylward (Giselle); and a brother-in-law.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Mary Keohan and Patricia Ralston.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on July 24, 2020 at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, 301 West Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, officiated by Rev. Dr. William F. Walsh, osfs. Viewing will be in the church starting at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Barbara’s honor to Creative Choices Pregnancy Resource Center, 4711 S Croatan Highway #2, Nags Head NC 27959.
