Thomas Edward “Tommy” Newman Sr., 76, of Swan Quarter, died September 1, 2020 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital, Washington.

Tommy was born in Hyde County on December 1, 1943 to the late Richard D., Sr. and Muriel Wahab Newman. He was married to the former Susie Meekins, who survives.

Tommy worked as a commercial fisherman and for thirty-two years he was the owner and operator of Newman’s Seafood. He honorably served his county during the Vietnam War with the United States Army.

A private graveside service was held at the family plot in Soule Cemetery. Pastor Mike Wheeler officiated.

In addition to his wife, surviving are sons Thomas Edward “Eddie” Newman Jr. and wife Gwen, Dell Allen Newman and wife Rhonda, both of Swan Quarter, and Richard Gordon Newman of Belhaven; grandchildren Misty Newman, Taylor Newman, Rylie Newman, Thomas Edward Newman III and wife Kelly; two great-grandchildren; brother Gilbert H. Newman of Pantego and sister Florence N. Abel of Swan Quarter.

He was preceded in death by brothers Mitchell Newman, R. D. Newman Jr., Harvey Newman; and sisters Nell N. Sears and Muriel “Nancy” Newman.
