The Bryan Cultural Series is offering the opportunity to hear United States Poet Laureate Joy Harjo read her poetry, discuss the inspirations for her work and how poetry and storytelling binds us together.
Harjo will join from hometown Tulsa, Oklahoma on Thursday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom to give insight into what it means to the poet laureate of the United States. The event is free and open to the public.
The poetry of Harjo is “powerful, thought-provoking and beautiful. The first Native American Poet Laureate of the United States, her voice is rooted in her heritage and upbringing, yet she speaks to far greater truths,” states a press release from the Bryan Cultural Series.
The author of nine books of poetry, several plays and children’s books and memoir Crazy Brave, her many honors include the Ruth Lily Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the Poetry Foundation, the Academy of American Poets Wallace Stevens Award, a PEN USA Literary Award, Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund Writers’ Award, a Rasmuson US Artist Fellowship, two NEA fellowships and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Harjo is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and is a founding board member of the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation.
