- This illustration, created at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reveals ultrastructural morphology exhibited by coronaviruses. Note the spikes that adorn the outer surface of the virus, which impart the look of a corona surrounding the virion, when viewed electron microscopically. In this view, the protein particles E, S, and M, also located on the outer surface of the particle, have all been labeled as well. A novel coronavirus, named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019. The illness caused by this virus has been named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Hyde County is currently experiencing an uptick in positive laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 27 active cases reported as of 1 p.m. on Monday, December 14. Ten of the case are individuals on Ocracoke Island and 17 are on the mainland, according to the Hyde County Health Department.
“Likely, this increase in cases is a result of multiple incidents, such as gatherings over the Thanksgiving holiday, and an increase in viral spread simply from community gatherings,” stated the press release. “The safest way to protect yourself is to avoid unnecessary gatherings of people you do not live with, wear a facial covering when you are in public, practice social distancing of 6 feet or more, and wash your hands frequently.”
“I know people are weary and tired of COVID-19. I am, too,” stated Luana Gibbs, Hyde health director. “We must do everything we can to reduce community spread. We have lost 5 members of our county to this extremely contagious virus. We do not want to lose more, and you never know who will have a mild case, versus a serious or lethal case. Please practice the 3 Ws and stay at home as much as possible.”
The Hyde County Health Department is using Carolina Community Tracing Collaborative (CCTC) to perform case investigations and contact tracing. “If you receive a call from this organization and you do not answer, they will identify themselves as calling on behalf of the Hyde County Health Department and ask you to call the statewide call center at 844-628-7223,” stated the release. “Please follow all of their instructions.”
