‘Take out’ fish dinner for great blue heron
This great blue heron (Ardea herodias), while having done a great job catching a fish, might have found it a challenge to swallow the catch in its customary one swallow.
Fish are a favorite food, but great blue herons also eat mice, snakes, crayfish, frogs, insects and just about anything they can catch.
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of nine national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex.
