Carlton Bernard “Bernie” Holt Jr., 65, of New London passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Atrium Health Stanly. Due to Covid-19, no public services are being held at this time, but one is planned for May 1, 2021.

Bernie was born May 1, 1955 in Stanly County to the late Carlton Bernard Holt Sr. and Betty Jean Thompson Holt.

Bernie was a creative and accomplished cook and loved cooking for friends, family, and anyone in need. He was famous for his soups and always realized the importance of sharing food with friends. He was an avid reader and enjoyed all genres, especially sci-fi, military novels, and history. Bernie was an interesting and interested conversationist and loved engaging people. He had ‘talking relationships’ with hundreds of people from their workplaces, from hangouts, from social gatherings, even from short travel times. In short, he loved and was interested in people and their stories. He was kind, friendly, and generous and loved by many. His favorite pastimes included gardening, walking his farm, connecting with his friends and family. He was a quick-witted joker and sly instigator of fun.

Bernie attended Oak Hill Academy in Mouth if Wilson, Virginia, Albemarle Senior High School, and Appalachian State University where he was one of the first members of the newly formed Watauga College. He made many friends there and other places. Some friendships are more than fifty years old.

Mr. Holt is survived by his sister Constance Holt Rose of Manteo, NC; his beloved nephew, Holt Chappell Rose of Murfreesboro, NC, his cherished niece, O’Anna Nicholson Rose of Manteo, NC, his girlfriend, Nancy Bot, and many friends whom he loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to National Wild Turkey Federation earmarked ‘Sawtooth’ (Matt Barringer, 14850 Hwy 49, Gold Hill, Nc 28071) This organization provides opportunities for disabled hunters to participate in hunts once a year.
