Bernie was a creative and accomplished cook and loved cooking for friends, family, and anyone in need. He was famous for his soups and always realized the importance of sharing food with friends. He was an avid reader and enjoyed all genres, especially sci-fi, military novels, and history. Bernie was an interesting and interested conversationist and loved engaging people. In short, he loved and was interested in people and their stories. He was kind, friendly, and generous and loved by many. His favorite pastimes included gardening, walking his farm, connecting with his friends and family. He was a quick-witted joker and sly instigator of fun.
Bernie attended Oak Hill Academy in Mouth if Wilson, Virginia, Albemarle Senior High School, and Appalachian State University where he was one of the first members of the newly formed Watauga College. He made many friends there and other places. Some friendships are more than fifty years old.
