The Manteo Board of Commissioners approved a conditional use permit at Manteo High School for the plan to build a new athletic field house. The amendment was needed because the field house will be built in a different location than proposed on the school’s original 2005 site plan.

Dare County Schools now intends to build locker rooms adjacent to the existing school gymnasium. The proposed field house is adjacent to the existing (60’ x 80’) outdoor basketball court that will be removed.

Board action came after the Manteo Planning Board recommended the conditional use permit be granted and after the Board of Commissioners held a quasi-judicial hearing on February 3. No opposition or concerns were voiced at that time.

In a separate action at the Feb 17 meeting, the Board of Commissioners approved the zoning designation of property at 0 Sir Walter Raleigh Street as R-2 General Residential. The property, formerly owned by Dare County, was annexed by the Town of Manteo in September 2020.
