Shirley had fond memories of growing up on Roanoke Island including long-netting with her father and uncles aboard the F/V Mary E, working as a barefoot waitress at the Oasis Restaurant on the Nags Head Causeway, and sneaking backstage at the outdoor production of The Lost Colony.  She was a proud member of the Manteo High School Class of 1953 and cherished the annual reunions with her classmates.

Shirley enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 US States as well as many National Parks and several Canadian Provinces. She especially loved Newfoundland, which reminded her of her beloved Outer Banks.

She loved the ocean and spent many hours at Coquina Beach with her friends as a teenager and at Kitty Hawk Pier teaching her young daughters how to swim. In later years, she enjoyed collecting seashells with her grandchildren.

A devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley loved attending little league baseball, hockey and soccer games, as well as dance recitals and drama productions. She never missed a High School or College Graduation or Military Celebration for her grandchildren.
