Edward Royden Clarke Jr., 89, of Engelhard, died Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at his residence.
He was born on February 10, 1932, to Royden Sr. and Elizabeth Mavery Clarke. He was married to Anna Marshall, who survives. He was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church.
As a young boy living in Maryland, Roy would ride his bicycle to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., where he discovered his love for history.
Following his high school graduation, he joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He attended IBM school where he learned to use and work on the first computers. After returning home from service, he took a summer job with the former East Carolina Bank and worked there for forty-three years until his retirement.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the home place, on Friday, May 21, 2021. Father James Lupton will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-seven years Anna M. Clarke; two sons, Ed Clarke (Courtney), Chris Clarke (Patrice), both of Engelhard; three daughters, Laura Complese (Dennis), Janet Clarke, Kim Simmons (Donald), of Engelhard; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.
Flowers are welcome, and memorial contributions can be made to a charity of choice or to one of Roy’s favorite charities, Engelhard Fire Department, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Shriners Hospital.
