Five Hyde County students completed the Nurse Aide I program at Beaufort County Community College this spring.

Rachel Brooks, Marisol Campos, Evelin Coronel, Hermiah Simpson and Diamond Smith are all also students at Mattamuskeet Early College High School (MECHS), with Coronel also earning an Associate in Arts from BCCC on May 13. The students all said that they plan to work in the medical field or as nurses in the future, with some planning to attend the nursing program at BCCC after they finish at MECHS.

The Nurse Aide I certificate course consists of theory, lab and clinical experiences, which prepares the student to provide personal care and basic nursing skills. Course content includes the role of the nurse aide, infection control, communication and resident’s rights.

These students are now eligible to take the North Carolina State Certification Examination to be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.

Nurse aide certification can give students an important tool to start gaining hands-on experience in the medical field and to earn supplemental income while in college. Qualified individuals are eligible for a fee waiver from NCWorks as well as scholarships.
