Celebrating Roxanna: Island Farm plans birthday party for beloved bovine

Published 6:45 pm Sunday, August 15, 2021

On Tuesday, August 17, Island Farm will celebrate the 13th birthday of beloved bovine Roxanna. “If you’ve ever visited the farm, you’ll likely remember Roxanna (otherwise known as ‘Roxie’) the cow,” stated a press release from Island Farm.

Roxie has captured the hearts of visitors and staff for over 12 years, after arriving on the farm as a yearling in June 2009. Shortly after, she was named “Roxanna” by a local preschool group and today she is most commonly referred to as “Roxie.”

Roxie is a Guernsey-Jersey cross (a milking breed), however she is technically a heifer and not a cow, stated Island Farm.

On her birthday, guests can expect to get up close and personal with Roxie. Visitors can feed her treats such as cucumbers, watermelon or sweet potato and sing “Happy Birthday” when a cow-safe cake is shared between her and her feathered friends – the chickens.

Birthday festivities will take place from 1-2 p.m. and are included in the price of admission.

Island Farm, located on the north-end of Roanoke Island, offers a trip back in time to 1850s Outer Banks. Open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., the living history site offers live interpretation and daily mini-programs including visits with the site’s Corolla wild horses, live blacksmithing, farmhouse tours, toys and games, weaving and other traditional crafts. Admission is $8 per person for those aged four and older and free for ages 0-3. The farmstead is located at 1140 N US Highway 64, north of Manteo, on Roanoke Island.
