Three area volleyball teams move to second rounds in state playoffs

In the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoffs in volleyball, three area teams – Currituck, Camden and Cape Hatteras – won in the first round. The three teams are set to play again on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

In 3A, Currituck, seeded No. 8, defeated Dixon 3 sets to 1. Currituck won sets one, three and four by scores of 25-11, 25-7 and 27-25. Dixon won the second set 25-22. Currituck is set to play Harnett Central at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

In 2A, Camden, seeded No. 1, defeated Heide Trask in three straight sets: 25-8, 25-12 and 26-24. Camden is set to play Roanoke Rapids on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

In 1A, Cape Hatteras, seeded No. 4, defeated North Duplin in three sets: 25-8, 25-15, and 25-17.

In the first set, long scoring runs by Jobell Porter, Molly Hanburger and Maleia Quidley pushed Cape Hatteras to a win.

In the second set, Cape Hatteras scored the winning point late in the second serving round. Hanburger served the winning point. Set point was scored by Lilly Ratliff with a push over the net.

The third set went into the third service round with no breakaway scoring runs.

Cape Hatteras is set to play Roxboro Community School on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m.

In the first round, Manteo’s volleyball players succumbed to Southwest Edgecombe, First Flight lost to C.B. Aycock and Ocracoke bowed to Northside. All teams lost by 3-0 scores.

Cross country regional meets are scheduled for Oct. 30.

The 1A East cross country regional meet is set for Pamlico County High School. The boys championship starts at 11 a.m., followed by the girls championship at noon.

The 2A East cross country regional meet is set for South Lenoir High School.

The 3A East cross country regional meet is set for Northeast Creek Park.
