Island Farm will hold the “Great Cucurbit Competition” this coming October. Hobbyists and serious farmers alike are welcome to try their hand in this unique vegetable competition.
“If you think you might be interested in joining in, the time to buy seeds is now!” stated an Island Farm press release.
What is a cucurbit? Cucurbitaceae family members – or cucurbits for short – include pumpkins, gourds, squash, cucumbers, watermelons and many more. Spring is the time to start acquiring seeds and planting.
Participating growers may enter their produce into competition, which will be judged by three classes: Largest, Highest Quality and Most Bizarre. This year, the competition will be limited to pumpkins and gourds and will take place on October 15, 2022 during the farm’s annual Pumpkin Patch event. In addition to the three classes, two will be voted on by the public for king and queen merely by popular vote.
Interested growers may apply to enter into competition by filling out a simple form found on www.obcinc.org/the-great-cucurbit-competition/. Applications are due by April 18, 2022 and exhibitors will be selected and notified by April 20, 2022. A paper copy of the application is available by calling Island Farm at 252-473-5440.
