Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh seek volunteers for Park Day events

On Saturday, April 9, Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site will host several Park Day volunteer events, including a large-scale beach cleanup effort held in partnership with the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association.

Park Day is American Battlefield Trust’s annual hands-on preservation event at historic sites across America.

Park Day Event at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

Time: 9-11 a.m.

Location: Meet park rangers at the Lindsay Warren Visitor Center.

Activities: Volunteers will help maintain the grounds of Fort Raleigh National Historic Site by performing basic trail work along the Freedom Trail and Thomas Hariot Trail. Basic painting of park signs and handrails may also occur.

Park Day Events at Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Event #1

Time: 7:30-11:30 a.m.

Locations: Ocean-side off-road vehicle ramps 2 through 55 and 70.

Activities: Walk the beach in the area in which you park for the day and fill a bag or two with trash or debris. Place bags near ramp entrances to make it easier for Cape Hatteras National Seashore staff to remove them at the end of the event.

This cleanup effort is held in partnership with the NCBBA. Similar cleanups are scheduled for June 11 and Sept. 17, 2022. For more information, contact Tom Brueckner at tom.brueckner@ncbbs.org or 973-714-9940.

Event #2

Time: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Location: Meet Cape Hatteras National Seashore rangers at the Ocracoke pony pens.

Activities: Volunteers will help with general groundskeeping of the historic Ocracoke pony pens.

Event #3

Time: 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Location: Outer Banks KOA Resort, 25099 N.C. Highway 12 in Rodanthe

Activities: Cape Hatteras National Seashore is partnering with the Outer Banks KOA Resort to hold another beach cleanup event. Park Day volunteers can pick up supplies between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Volunteers can participate in Park Day online using #ParkDay2022.
