Site work for the Swan Quarter Volunteer Fire Department’s (SQVFD) new substation began in mid-January and the first signs of the actual building construction were seen on April 22 as the steel upright beams, roof trusses and supports were methodically hoisted into place.

Stocks & Taylor Construction, Inc. of Washington, NC is overseeing the $1.5 million project, made possible by a USDA Community Facilities Grant and a long-term loan.

The clearing of the site and fill-dirt work went smoothly. Once the initial plumbing and electrical work was complete, the concrete for the foundation and floor of the 5,086 square foot facility was poured in late February. The driveways, ponds and swales have been built.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Stotesberry explains that he expects the work to progress rapidly during the next two weeks. “If the weather cooperates, the remaining steel supports should be in place and once that is done, the roof and sides of the building can be installed. These workmen know what they are doing and how to get the job done quickly and efficiently,” he explained.

“Once the shell is up, the interior work will begin and I expect that to move just as fast. It’s too soon to know when the actual completion date will be, but we are already looking forward to our ribbon cutting ceremony this summer,” Stotesberry elaborated.

The SQVFD was established in 1971 by a group of citizens who were concerned with providing an organized fire safety presence for the community. Since that time, their area of operation has expanded, as has the level of services they provide. Today they operate with 21 unpaid volunteers who provide not only fire incident response, but also first responder service for medical emergencies. They also work with the Hyde County Schools to provide fire safety awareness to the youth of the community. They are a recognized nonprofit entity by the Internal Revenue Service and donations to the Swan Quarter Volunteer Fire Department are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
