Currituck Extension delivers report of 2021 accomplishments

NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck presented its annual “Report to the People” to county officials at the April 18, 2022 Board of Commissioners meeting. County Extension director Cameron Lowe reminded the public that Cooperative Extension has existed nationwide since 1914 and exists to ensure that everyone has access to non-formal, research-based education that improves agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being, youth and communities.

A video highlighting the testimonials of Extension clientele was then shared. Sidney Garrett of Moyock shared what Extension means to farmers. Sarah Joannou shared a heartfelt story about how Extension staff helped her with an especially difficult Medicare situation. Finally, Hannah Meads highlighted how her involvement in 4-H as a young person inspired her to volunteer and pass those traditions on to her own children. Overall, NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck offered 340 classes and consultations in 2021 with a financial impact of over 1.1 million dollars. Highlights of the year included reaching 114 youth through 4-H summer fun programming; providing pesticide applicator credits to 307 individuals; saving Medicare clients over $72,000 in drug plan costs; launching the Currituck Farm Festival agricultural appreciation event with over 500 in attendance; and extending the reach of Extension staff through volunteers who donated their time valued at over $138,000.
