Letter to the Editor: Volunteers needed to help with weekly Hatteras fish fry

To the Editor:

We are gearing up, once again, for the Hatteras Community Fish Fry, an institution here since 1955. Once again, the Hatteras Fire Department will be the weekly home of the fish fry from Memorial Weekend till Labor Day.

We thank you all for your continued support.

The profit will again be shared equally among the Hatteras United Methodist Church, the Hatteras Village Volunteer Fire Department, the Hatteras Ladies Fire Auxiliary and the Hatteras Village Civic Association.

The Ladies Fire Auxiliary disburses its funds to the following organizations:

We have had a lot of changes over the winter and the new fish fry season is in need of volunteers. It takes about 25 to 30 people to prepare for the fish fry and ensure that everyone who comes to purchase a meal has a meaningful experience as well as a good meal.

I hope all of you realize how much we depend on your willingness to volunteer. We are grateful for all that you do each year and the many ways you respond to the needs of your community. If it is possible for you to volunteer this year, please contact me. No one needs to volunteer each week, but it is important to have a list of responsible and committed volunteers to continue this most valuable tradition.

The two afternoon time slots need some volunteer help on Saturdays.

The morning shift needs some substitutes.

Morning shift prepares the salad, slaw, hushpuppy mix, cuts lemons, prepares cocktail sauce and tartar sauce and makes tea.

The 3 p.m. shift washes, salts, and breads the fish and finishes mixing the hushpuppy mix for the cook shack. Shift workers prepare tables for fish fry and set up tea table and dessert table.

The 4:30 p.m. shift comes to work the serving line, the dessert station, beverage station. This shift also works in the kitchen, washing dishes and keeping food prepared.

In addition, we need at least 10 home-made desserts each week. Store bought mixes are great!
