In May of 2022, “Beginning Teachers” in Dare County Schools felt elated when the sisters of the Delta Zeta chapter of the NC Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation handed them each the second of two bags, with “treats” for their first year of teaching.

These bags included drink tumblers and gift cards to the Front Porch Cafe.

Diane Childress, president of the organization for 2022-24, was a presenter to three Beginning Teachers at First Flight Middle School. She recalled that newcomer Mary Weinandy noted that giving her this bag made her feel special, and novice Emily Wilkinson stated, “This is awesome!”

North Carolina DKG’s membership is approximately 4,000 with 98 chapters. One of the professional and personal growth points of the foundation is that “Membership allows for women educators to use their voices of influence, not only in North Carolina, but throughout the world,” and it is felt that by doing this for Beginning Teachers, they are set on a course of introduction into a remarkable vocation, from which teachers – both current and retired – have all benefited.
