To the Editor:

The recent passing of Nelma Tillett brought many memories of Nell and Ron and all the girls during a time when Wanchese was in transition from a quiet fishing village to the current center of boat building and maritime commerce.

Not many realize the impact Nell made on the future of Wanchese when the new Seafood Industrial Park was in limbo because of the reluctance of local land owners to make their land available for that project. Nell quietly encouraged her neighbors of the potential the project would mean to their community – a harbor that would bring more opportunities for their seafood industry livelihood.

Although her quiet work went unnoticed by the general public, those of us who were officially pursuing the project knew how her efforts helped convince her neighbors and make the land available. Nell was a very effective promoter of Wanchese and its people, and she did much toward making the industrial park possible. We will all miss her.

Yours very truly,

Alvah H. Ward Jr.
