The Dare County Sheriff’s Office received a report on July 31, 2022 that the sign on the north end of Avon that reads “Welcome to Avon, Historically Named Kinnakeet” had been stolen sometime on or around July 30.

The sign is roughly 6 ft. by 4 ft. and “would have taken a moment to remove and steal since it was bolted to the posts that were left behind,” stated an announcement from DCSO. “Dare County and the towns that reside in it take pride in our area and try to make it a great experience for those who visit. This sign is part of letting those who come here know where they are but also a little history lesson as well.”

Those with any information on who may have taken this sign should contact the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at 252-475-5980 Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. or the Dare County Communications Center at 252-473-3444 anytime.

“We greatly appreciate any assistance in locating those who felt the need to take the sign and a piece of history with them,” stated the DCSO announcement.
