The ghouls of Frank N. Furter’s Transylvania will be making a return to the Outer Banks this Halloween and Ralphie and his gang will be telling their Christmas Story in December, as Theatre of Dare announces a pair of productions it has playfully termed “Off ToDWay.”

“Basically, ‘Off ToDway’ means anything a little out of the ordinary, a little challenging, or perhaps in an alternate location from our main season productions,” explained Stuart Parks II, Theatre of Dare board president. “It gives our performers, and our audiences, a chance to expand their horizons a little.”

This season’s Off ToDway productions begin in late October, with a reboot of The Rocky Horror Show, which Theatre of Dare successfully staged at The Lost Colony’s Sound Stage in 2018. This time around, the community theater group is promising a “Halloween Extravaganza,” complete with goodie bags and ghostly ushers guiding audience members to their seats. That production will run October 28-31 at the main stage in Kitty Hawk, with tickets going on sale in early October.

In December, Theatre of Dare will return to the Dare Arts Building in Manteo for a special theatrical reading of the holiday classic A Christmas Story, in which a young boy named Ralphie Parker spends the season dreaming of his ultimate gift: a Red Ryder BB gun. This production will feature a huge helping of audience participation, including some lucky audience members hopping on stage with the cast. A Christmas Story: The Reading will take the stage December 15-18, with tickets going on sale in mid-November.

The two “Off ToDway” productions are a supplement to Theatre of Dare’s regular five-show season, which kicks off October 7 with Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. The Off ToDway shows are not a part of the season ticket package, but season ticket holders will get first crack at tickets before they go on sale to the general public.
