October 29, 1960 – November 3, 2022

Point Harbor, NC – Valerie Lynn O’Connor Hawekotte, age 62, of Point Harbor, NC passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the Outer Banks Hospital after a courageous 4.5 year battle against cancer. Her determination and resilience to fight for every minute with her family never wavered.

Valerie was born on October 29, 1960 to the late Daniel Edward O’Connor and Winifred Ann Garbinsky O’Connor in Washington, DC. She grew up in Laurel, MD where she graduated from Meade Senior High School (Class of 1978). While in school, Valerie was a member of her local softball team and spent her time developing an enthusiasm for horticulture. In 1983, Valerie moved to Kitty Hawk, NC to be closer to her parents; shortly after moving she met and later married her husband Jay Robert Hawekotte on January 27, 1984. Together they raised two beautiful children and spent time actively supporting the local Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) chapter for many years. Valerie was also a devoted supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.  She loved to travel and spent winters at her second home in Isabela, Puerto Rico. She was an avid beachgoer, spending much of her time sunbathing or walking the beach collecting sea glass. Valerie also had a passion for gardening, baking, crafting and crocheting. But above all, her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lindsay Marie Hunter (John) of Camden, NC; a son, Daniel Robert Hawekotte (Michael) of Euless, TX; two sisters, Vickie O’Connor and Verena O’Connor of Point Harbor, NC; and two grandchildren, Jay Hunter and Adalynn Hunter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Winifred O’Connor of Point Harbor, NC.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022 at Powells Point Christian Church, 197 Church Road, Harbinger, NC 27941 with the Rev. Vince Rodkey officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942 in her memory.
