Currituck 4-H represented on the national stage

November 5, 2022 was a banner day for Currituck County 4-H’ers Cayden Lowe, Kilynn Brinkley, Chloe Fredrick and Emma Solley. From North Carolina to Kentucky, these stellar young women earned honors for their performance in 4-H competitions.

The NC Shooting Sports National Team tryouts tournament was held In Ellerbe, NC on the first weekend in November and Currituck County 4-H Sharpshooters, Kilynn Brinkley, Chloe Fredrick and Emma Solley earned top honors and were selected to be members of the 2023 NC State Shooting Sports Team. This team will compete at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament in Grand Island, Nebraska in June of 2023.

Selection to the NC 4-H Team requires top ten placement in regional and state tournaments, a top four placement at the tryout tournament, and a commitment to travel to Ellerbe each month for training and practice. Kilynn (small bore pistol), Emma (rifle), and Chloe (air rifle) devoted countless hours practicing and training with their coaches Kathy Melton, Eric Brinkley, Malcolm Murray and Jason Fredrick. Their dedication and commitment to excellence will serve them well as they prepare for the national tournament in June. Congratulations and good luck!

Meanwhile, on the same weekend, in Louisville, Kentucky, Currituck County 4-Her Cayden Lowe was completing her Gold Medal sweep in 4-H Presentation (horse category) National competitions. Cayden won gold medals at the 2022 District and State NC 4-H Presentation Contests with her presentation “The Injection Connection?” and qualified to represent North Carolina 4-H at the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships (August) in Perry, Georgia; the All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio (October); and the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky (November). Cayden competed against youth from all over the country and displayed an immense level of poise, courage, confidence and motivation as she placed first in each of these fiercely contested competitions.

Cayden spent countless hours practicing and fine tuning her speech and expanding her level of expertise; and this coupled with her dedication and commitment to excellence were keys to her success. Congratulations Cayden!

At NC Cooperative Extension, 4-H Youth Development strives to equip young people with the knowledge and skills they need to become successful adults. Effective communication skills, self-motivation, teamwork, goal setting, self-discipline and critical thinking are vital life skills for youth to develop as they grow into tomorrow’s leaders.
