Hatteras Island residents can embrace their inner “elf” when Cape Hatteras Secondary School Drama Club students present their production of Elf The Musical Jr. The show featuring 19 student performers and 13 technicians opens on December 9, 2022.

“Elf The Musical Jr. is a quintessential holiday musical that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy,” said director and choreographer Blake Taft. “From the first rehearsal, these students never ceased to amaze me with their creativity, dedication and stage presence. I think the community of Hatteras Island will be amazed with what they have created, despite not having produced a musical since 2018,” he added.

The CHSS Drama Club will present Elf The Musical Jr. on Friday, December 9 and Saturday, December 10 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 11 at 2 p.m. The performances will take place at the Cape Hatteras Secondary School Auditorium, located at 48576 NC Hwy 12 in Buxton. Tickets are $10 and are available for purchase at The Froggy Dog (40050 NC Hwy 12 in Avon), the front office of Cape Hatteras Secondary School or through any of the cast members. Elf the Musical Jr. is based on the 2003 New Line Cinema hit and features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar (The Wedding Singer) and Chad Beguelin (Disney’s Aladdin On Broadway, The Wedding Singer), a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

“The Musical tells the story of a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is given the name Buddy and raised by elves in the North Pole,” stated a press release from the CHSS Drama Club. “Buddy lives happily unaware that he is a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list, and his stepbrother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of the holidays.”

Elf The Musical Jr. is presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
