North Carolina Marine Fisheries Proclamation FF-8-2023 sets the 2023 commercial and recreational seasons and harvest restrictions for harvesting American shad and hickory shad for commercial harvest in Coastal and Joint Fishing waters.

Commercial Harvest

Cape Fear River and Tributaries: American shad harvest set for 12:01 a.m., Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, to 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Hickory shad harvest set for 12:01 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 1 to 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023.

Atlantic Ocean: hickory shad harvest period runs from 12:01 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 1 through 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023.

All other internal coastal and joint fishing waters: American shad 12:01 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15 to 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023. Hickory shad: 12:01 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, through 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023.

Recreational Harvest

Pamlico and Pungo Rivers and tributaries

Harvest limit: 10 American or hickory shad in the aggregate, per person per day tkane b hook-and-line or for recreational purposes.

It is unlawful to possess American shad or hickory shad for recreational purposes by any method except hook-and-line after 11:59 P.M., Friday, April 14, 2023

Cape Fear River and Tributaries

Harvest limit: 10 American shad or hickory shad in the aggregate, per person per day taken by hook-and-line or for recreational purposes and only five of the 10 may be an American shad.

It is unlawful to possess American shad or hickory shad for recreational purposes by any method except hook-and-line after 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023.

Atlantic Ocean

Harvest limit: 10 hickory shad per person per day taken by hook-and-line or for recreational purposes.

It is unlawful to possess hickory shad for recreational purposes by any method except hook-and-line after 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023.

All other internal Coastal and Joint Fishing Waters

Harvest limit: 10 American shad or hickory shad in the aggregate, per person per day taken by hook-and-line or for recreational purposes and only one of the ten may be an American shad.

It is unlawful to possess American shad or hickory shad for recreational purposes by any method except hook-and-line after 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2023.
