Ellie Hedgepeth, a third grader at Cape Hatteras Elementary School, was selected as a youth ambassador to head to Capitol Hill this week to advocate on behalf of the Tourette Association of America.

The association’s website, tourette.org, notes that “Tourette Syndrome and other Tic Disorders are not rare. The current estimates are that 1 out of every 160 children between the ages of 5-17 in the United States has TS and that 1 out of every 100 children has TS or another Tic Disorder.”

Amanda Hedgepeth said her daughter “is such a doll and Cape Hatteras Elementary is incredible about supporting her, the principal actually showed a video on her first day of school to everyone to give them a head’s up about Tourette’s so that kids would understand her instead of being confused or trying to fill in the blanks themselves.”
