Theatre of Dare will present Urinetown: The Musical, opening Thursday, March 9 and running through Sunday, March 19.
Despite its odd and arguably unpalatable title, Urinetown was a Broadway hit when it debuted in 2001, with 10 nominations and three Tony wins. “The story involves a dystopian town in the midst of a 20-year drought, where private restroom facilities are outlawed and bodily functions come with a fee, charged by a malevolent corporation called Urine Good Company,” stated a Theatre of Dare press release. “From the depths of despair, a hero arises to declare that peeing should be free, and he leads a revolution to accomplish that goal.”
“Don’t let the name fool you,” says director Gail Hutchison. “Urinetown is a lot of fun – music, dancing, and laughs. The cast is phenomenal, and our volunteers have really worked hard to put together an impressive spectacle.”
Performances will be held at Theatre of Dare, located at 3848 N. Croatan Highway in Kitty Hawk, March 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m., with matinees March 12 and 19 at 2 p.m.
“We strongly encourage our audience to buy tickets online at theatreofdareobx.com,” says Kelsey Thompson, business director. “It is not uncommon for us to sell out by the day of performance, so in general I don’t recommend relying on walk-ups.”
