Mealtime for a hooded merganser at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

A female hooded merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) has a mouthful of striped mullet at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Mergansers’ bills have serrated edges that help them hold their often slippery and wiggling meal.
