On March 6, 2023, Dare County commissioners agreed with a request from the U.S. Motto Action Committee to display the United States motto “In God We Trust” permanently and prominently in a location and manner to be determined.
Since 1864, “In God We Trust” has been displayed on U.S. coins.
On July 30, 1954, the words became the official national motto.
In his presentation to the Dare County Board of Commissioners on March 6, Rick Lanier, vice chair/field director of the U.S. Motto Action Committee, said that 100% of the cost associated with the installation of the motto will be by private donation. He also said that the display is not open to legal challenge.
The resolution to install the words “in a location and manner to be determined” was passed unanimously.
