Three of a kind: Brown pelicans on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis), like these photographed on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, are among the many bird species that can be found in the area.

Standing along the ocean shore, one can often see long lines of brown pelicans riding the air current just above the top of the wave line.

They may also be seen making dramatic dives straight down from high up into the water to stun and capture fish for meals.
