If you’ve ever wanted to be transported to the land of Oz or to skip down Alice’s rabbit hole, Theatre of Dare has just the event for you in late April.

The local community theater troupe will be hosting an event in tandem with their production of The Wizard of Wonderland. On Saturday, April 29, 2023, T.O.D. will transform its space into a magical forest – the Tulgey Wood to be exact – and host two Whimsical Woodland Tea Parties. These two-and-a-half hour events are sure to be a highlight of the spring on the Outer Banks.

The first event, the Children’s Afternoon Tea, will be held at 1 p.m. There, attendees will meet Dorothy, Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cowardly Lion, the White Rabbit, the Tin Man, the Dormouse, the Scarecrow, the Red Queen and the Wicked Witch. During that time, a lovely spread of finger sandwiches, tea cakes, cookies, cupcakes, flavored teas and waters will be provided buffet-style by Cafe Lachine. And be sure to come dressed as your favorite Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland character because there will be a costume contest. The child with the best costume will receive a week’s worth of free admission to one of the Theater Summer Camp sessions ($185 value). A performance of The Wizard of Wonderland will top off this lively afternoon of fantasy and make believe. Tickets for this event will be $25 for youth, $35 for adults and $200 for a table of six.

At 6 p.m. the same day, a more adult version of the afternoon will be presented as High Tea. All of the same elements listed above will be available but in a more adult manner. This includes the character meet and greet and costume contest. Where the adult with the best costume will receive two tickets to the 2023-24 season of Theatre of Dare ($150 value). A more elevated spread of finger sandwiches, canapes, biscuits, cookies, cupcakes, flavored teas and waters from Cafe Lachine will be provided. Sparkling wine bubbles will also be included for the adults in the crowd, with limited beer and wine available for purchase as well. The evening will culminate in a performance of The Wizard of Wonderland. Tickets for this event will be $35 for youth, $45 for adults and $275 for a table of six.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this event to the Outer Banks,” said Kelsey Thompson, the producer and director of both the event and the production. “I love everything whimsical, fantastical, and over-the-top. And, with the help of Nancy Harvey Smith of Holiday House Weddings and Events, I know that this will be an experience that both young and old will be talking about for years to come.”
