Seven mathletes from Manteo schools will represent Dare County Schools in the North Carolina State Math Contest at Fayetteville State University on May 4, 2023.
Mathlete team members from Manteo Middle School and Manteo High School earned high placement in the regional math contest held by Elizabeth City State University March 23 and qualified to compete at the state level. The regional competition was the largest to date with over 400 middle and high school students participating. Top math students from the surrounding areas competed in one of the four mathematics divisions: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Comprehensive.
Cora Walker from Manteo High School won first place overall in the Level 2 division. Finnegan Davis from Manteo Middle School placed second overall in the Level 1 division.
Alan Sanchez and Finn Schutz from Manteo High School, along with Sarah Marshall, Mason Zadd and Solomon Cooper from Manteo Middle School, also received high scores in the regional contest and will compete at the state-level contest in May.
“We are extremely proud of our Manteo Mathletes and the success they had in this academic competition. We look forward to increasing the opportunities for our students to participate in additional academic competitions district-wide and continued academic successes for all of our students in the future,” said Dare County Schools Superintendent Steve Basnight.
The North Carolina State Math contest is a network of N.C. mathematics contests offered in four divisions (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Comprehensive), culminating in state-level final competition. Various North Carolina universities and community colleges offer local qualifying contests, advancing top students to state-level competition.
