Currituck County Schools holds inaugural Career Signing Day

Currituck County Schools, in partnership with the Currituck Chamber of Commerce, held its first annual Career Signing Day on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. This special ceremony recognized students from Currituck County High School who have committed to enrolling in a community college in a career and technical education pathway, enlisting in a military branch or employing in the workforce immediately after graduation.

Jennifer Woods, career and technical education director for Currituck County Schools, welcomed guests and enthusiastically shared the purpose and significance of the inaugural event, including making it an ongoing tradition for CCS students and community.

Josh Bass, president of the Currituck Chamber of Commerce, also spoke, recognizing distinguished guests, thanking sponsors and expressing the importance of recognizing the “next generation of business leaders.”

Students signing to enroll, enlist or employ were:

Reece Kropp, enrolling with Tidewater Community College to pursue mortuary science;
Hannah Morse, enrolling with Tidewater Community College to pursue nursing;
William Hebden, enlisting with the United States Marine Corps;
Aaron Kirby, enlisting with the United States Marine Corps;
Isabelle Nekervis, enlisting with the United States Navy;
Bradley Peterson, employing with the Newport News Shipyard to complete an apprenticeship; and
Grant Shields, employing with CT Mechanical,

William Clark, employing with Chesapeake RV Solutions, could not attend the ceremony but participated in a pre-ceremony signing. Alexis Davis, enlisting with the United States Marine Corps, will be signing post-ceremony.

In closing, Assistant Superintendent Renee Dowdy, remarked, “We believe in the power of community.” This sentiment was evident as students participating in the ceremony to enroll, enlist or employ were surrounded by family, friends and multiple members of their Currituck community, including school and district leaders from Currituck County Schools, Currituck County Board of Education members, Board of Commissioners members, College of The Albemarle representatives including President Dr. Jack Bagwell, Thomas Chatham, interim dean of student support services at Tidewater Community College, representatives from the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy, and partnering businesses and organizations.
