The Outer Banks Scallywags fell to the Edenton Steamers 10-1 on June 1, the opening night of the team’s 2023 summer season.

This was the debut night of the Outer Banks Scallywags. After previously being named the Outer Banks Daredevils from 1997 to 2019, the team was brought back this season and rebranded the Scallywags.

The Steamers fueled their lead with six of their runs coming in the top of the second inning. The lone run for the Scallywags came off the bat of Hayden Friese. Friese hit the very first homerun in Scallywags history.

During the top of the sixth inning, a ball was hit to Outer Banks center fielder Cole Mascolo – and the ball was completely lost in the fog. The umpires and coaches got together and discussed canceling and delaying the game due to the fog. The game was put on hold for 10 minutes to see if it would pass. The fog stayed and the game was called due to concerns over player safety.

The team’s next game was June 3, in which the Scallywags fell to the River Bandits in a close loss, 3-2. The Scallywags lost their first road game of the season and fell to an 0-2 record.

Alex Ulloa was a bright spot in the loss for the Outer Banks. Ulloa went 2-4 on the day with an RBI single and an RBI double, supplying the Scallywags with both of their two runs on the night. Aidan Feather and Noah Smeltzer were the two to score.

Paddy McGonigal was the Scallywags’ starting pitcher, throwing for four innings, giving up one earned run and striking out five. Evan Panjwani replaced McGonigal for the next four innings, also allowing one earned run and striking out seven.

The Scallywags will get their chance at revenge when the River Bandits visit the Outer Banks for the back end of a home game. Check out www.outerbanksscallywags.com to find the team’s summer schedule, updates, merchandise and more.
