Barred owl snack break on the refuge

In a tree on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, a barred owl (Strix varia) partakes in a thin meal – or maybe it’s more of a snack?

For a bird whose diet consists of mostly squirrels, rabbits, mice, fish and other birds, very small snakes and lizards don’t offer much in the way of mealtime bulk.

In one swallow, the meal was out of sight.
