Death in Hatteras reported, cause unknown pending autopsy

On Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at around 12:49 p.m., deputies with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Dare County Emergency Medical Services staff and Hatteras Island Rescue Squad members were dispatched to a call for service in the 57000 block of Kohler Drive in Hatteras village, reported a DCSO media release.

The deputies made contact with a person and comments were made about a body in a residence.

When deputies arrived at the location, they found Luther Dudley Burrus III, 68, deceased in his residence.

Investigators from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and a Medical Examiner responded to the scene and conducted a death investigation. The cause of death in this case is currently unknown pending an autopsy which is expected to occur later this week. The investigation is ongoing.

Burrus retired in February 2016 as a parks maintenance worker at the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department.
