Manteo Faith Baptist Church welcomes Outer Banks community members to enjoy its annual “Operation Backpack” event on Saturday, August 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, located at 1037 Burnside Road in Manteo. The event is rain or shine.

Operation Backpack, sponsored by Manteo Faith Baptist Church, is being held to benefit the students and their families in the community. All participants will receive a backpack filled by event sponsors with school supplies specific to each student’s grade level.

There will be a “Bucket Dump,” where participants will get a chance to dump a bucket of water on various Manteo coaches and teachers – and even the Manteo Elementary School principal – if the target is hit. Various tents will be set up with different activities and games for students to participate in.

“Faith Baptist has been hosting this event for many years and every year we’ve not only accomplished our goals, but continued to increase participation,” said Melva Draper, director of Operation Backpack. “With the help of Manteo, Wanchese, Manns Harbor and other OBX businesses, schools, first responders and volunteers, we anticipate serving over 200 students in the area.”

Participants are invited to complimentary hot dog, chips and drinks. Prizes will be awarded at various games. The OBX Health Coach will offer screenings for adults and children. There will be free children’s haircuts by licensed stylists. First responders will be giving away bicycle helmets to the kids.

“Supplies are limited so don’t miss out! Get a haircut, bicycle helmet, food, backpack and school supplies and play some games,” invited the event announcement. “Remember, this event happens ‘rain or shine.’ See you there!”
