Dare County Board of Commissioners Chairman Bob Woodard recently presented author Suzanne Tate and illustrator James Melvin with certificates of appreciation in recognition of the best-selling children’s “Nature Series” of books the pair have created together over the past three decades. The certificates were presented to Tate and Melvin at the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting held August 7, 2023.

Their collaboration began when the first book in the series – “Crabby & Nabby, A Tale of Two Blue Crabs” – was released in 1988, and since then, the popular series has grown to include dozens of titles that have become a favorite read among thousands of children, including “Flossie Founder: A Tale of a Flat Fish,” “Danny & Daisy: A Tale of a Dolphin Duo,” “Lindie Lobster: A Tale of Big Claws,” “Skippy Scallop: A Tale of Bright Blue Eyes” and “Tommy Tuna: A Tale of a Big Fish,” among many others.

“Over the past three decades, Suzanne and James have forged and nurtured a partnership that has led to the creation of so many unique stories about an assortment of creatures that children can encounter in real life here on the Outer Banks,” said Woodard. “They have fostered a love not only of reading, but also of learning about the wide array of wildlife – from scallops and sea turtles to oysters and otters – that call the beaches, marshes and waterways of the Outer Banks home. Thank you, James and Suzanne, for all of your incredible contributions to readers of all ages throughout Dare County and all along the Outer Banks over the years.”
