On Sept. 6, 2023, Dare County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution proclaiming the week of Sept. 17 through 23 as U.S. Constitution Week.

On Sept. 17 some 236 years ago, the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document the convention had created and send it to the states for ratification. The Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia met between May and September of 1787. After nine ratifications, the Constitution came into effect March 9, 1789. North Carolina ratified the Constitution Nov. 21, 1789, making it the 12th state to ratify the document.

The 2023 proclamation was presented by members of the Virginia Dare Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Attending the meeting were members Janie Serbousek, Colleen Fagersten and Helen Pisek. The proclamation urges all citizens of Dare County to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves. County manager Robert L. Outten read the proclamation before its adoption by the commissioners.
