On Sept. 6, 2023, Dare County Board of Commissioners declared Sept. 18 through 24, 2023 Diaper Need Awareness Week in the county.

Carla Heppert, education and program evaluation manager for Children & Youth Partnership, presented the proclamation and explained the program.

The partnership launched the Dare County Diaper Bank in 2020 during the COVID pandemic. So far, the local program has distributed 7,600 packs of diapers, or over 240,000 diapers.

Packs of diapers are distributed the second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month. The October dates are Oct. 10 and Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Children & Youth Partnership Center at 534 Ananias Dare St. in Manteo. Heppert said 104 families visit monthly.

Diaper need is described as “the condition of not having a sufficient supply of clean diapers to keep babies and toddlers clean, dry and healthy.”

Heppert said a family will spend $70 to $80 per month for diapers for one child. A daily or weekly diaper supply is generally an eligibility requirement for babies and toddlers to attend childcare.

Dare commissioners unanimously adopted the proclamation presented by Heppert.

After that action, board Vice Chairman Wally Overman moved to send a $10,000 contribution to the Children & Youth Partnership. The motion was adopted unanimously.

Individuals and organizations can donate to the Diaper Bank, purchasing packages of diapers and dropping off at the partnership’s offices, donate to Children & Youth Partnership online at darekids. org/diaper-bank or by hosting a diaper drive.
