The Dare County Department of Health & Human Services (DCDHHS) recognized two long-serving members of its Board of Health & Human Services for their hard work and contributions during their tenure. Tim Shearin, of Manteo, has served for more than 12 years and Dr. James Woodson, also of Manteo, has served a total of eight years. Both Shearin and Woodson’s term ended in August.

“I want to thank both Mr. Shearin and Dr. Woodson for their many years of service and dedication to our mission of protecting the health of Dare County residents as well as helping and strengthening families and individuals to achieve self-sufficiency,” said DCDHHS director Dr. Sheila Davies. “Their guidance and commitment have been invaluable.”

Shearin first began his tenure on the Board of Social Services in June of 2011. When the Health and Social Services departments and their respective boards consolidated in September of 2013, Shearin filled the at-large seat on the newly-formed Board of Health & Human Services. In September of 2014, he became chair and has served in that capacity since.

Woodson, who has a dentistry practice in Nags Head, was first appointed to the DCDHHS Board in September of 2015, filling the dentist seat and has been at that post for the past eight years.

During their time on the board, in 2015, Dare County became the first county in the state to ban e-cigarettes from restaurants and bars. Additionally, while on the board, both Shearin and Woodson assisted the county in navigating the COVID pandemic and updating the county’s dangerous dog ordinance.

The Dare County Board of Health & Human Services is composed of members selected by the Dare County Board of Commissioners. Responsible for policymaking and rulemaking in accordance with the North Carolina General Statute Laws, the board meets at least quarterly throughout the year.
